History
Ian Gould trained as an instructor in 1999 and initially worked for a large national driving school. After a period of time he felt that the time was right to branch out on his own, and so 17 Plus school of motoring was formed.

However business and Ian's popularity as ana instructor soon meant that we needed to expand the driving school. We approached our second instructor Robin Hoad, again another excellent driving instructor who has proved very popular with our pupils. Our next instructor was Peter Harris who also covers the Exmouth area, another very popular instructor.

As business was growing rapidly we had to find another instructor, Graham Hockin, again very popular with all our students. OUr most recent instructor is Stuart Winter who relocated to this area to join, and now his diary is blossoming.

We do not have a policy of advertising for instructors and feel that this impart is why we are so successful, as we approach our instructors knowing that they are excellent instructors with good reputations. Which we are sure benefits our reputation, but ultimately benefits our pupils.

Pass PlusPass plus
PASS PLUS is a training scheme for new drivers. It's much more than just a few extra lessons. This specially designed course by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry, helps you

  • gain valuable driving experience safely
you will be taught how to deal with a wide range of road and traffic situations, many of which you probably won't have faced before
  • build on your existing skills and knowledge
it can take years to become a skilled driver. PASS PLUS helps get you there by speeding up the learning process under expert tuition
  • reduce your risk of being in a road crash
the course will help boost your awareness of all kinds of hazards and help you learn how to anticipate, plan for and deal with them safely
  • save money on car insurance premiums
naturally, you will have to pay for the course. Fees for the Pass Plus course will vary depending on where you live and the instructor or driving school you choose. Bear in mind too that it will take a minimum of six hours, all of which need to be taken after passing your test. If more sessions are needed for you to successfully complete the course, this may add to the cost.
When you have successfully completed the course, you are advised to check available discounts offered by the insurance companies taking part in the scheme. The amount you save will depend on the company you choose, you may even save more than you paid for the course.
  • boost your confidence
if you feel nervous driving on your own, the PASS PLUS training can help you become more confident on the roads
  • give peace of mind to your loved ones

Pass Plus consists of six practical modules which cover driving in town, in all weathers, on rural roads, at night, on dual carriageways and on motorways. You can take it at any time within the first 12 month of passing your test.

There is no test at the end of it – your driving will be continually assessed and you must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard:

  • achieved – successfully reached the standard required for each of the competencies
  • exceeded – exceeded the required standard for each of the competencies

In exceptional circumstances, if a module can't be done on the road it will be covered in a theory session. The highest level you can reach is 'achieved' as you've not been able to demonstrate the relevant practical skills.

It has been developed by the Diving Standards Agency with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry. The driving tuition course has been designed to improve your skills in areas where you may have little experience reduce your risk of being involved in a road accident.

The course lasts a minimum of 6 hours and includes:

  • Town Driving
  • All weather Driving
  • Out of Town and Rural Roads
  • Night Driving
  • Dual Carriageway Driving
  • Motorway Driving

There is no further test to take. When your instructor is satisfied with your performance you receive a certificate from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA). This certificate will earn you a substantial discount on your insurance premium from one of the companies in the scheme.

Why more training?

As a new driver, you are more likely to have an accident in the first than at any other time in your motoring career. Lack of experience means that you can be as much as two seconds slower than a more practiced motorist.

Young new drivers are especially vulnerable. They hold only 10% of licences, but they are involved in 20% of road accidents in which someone is injured.

Pass Plus gives you valuable extra experience and positive driving skills that would otherwise take a long time to acquire. You should be a safer and better driver.

Young drivers with a Pass Plus qualification can obtain up to a 35% discount on their premium. You may be asked more questions in getting a quote but this helps them provide a cheaper quote because they will gain a better understanding of your personal circumstances.

You will have to pay for the course but if you complete it successfully, you will be offered a discount on your car insurance by the companies taking part in the scheme.  The precise saving will depend on which company you choose.
